Adoption Criteria
So, you are considering
adopting a dog. Congratulations!
Let us walk you
through some basic steps on your path to finding the
right dog for your lifestyle, wants and needs. This
is a long commitment; we want to ensure you and the
dog are properly matched.
Here's a sample
checklist to reflect upon, answer honestly and share
with all those who will be affected by this new
adoption:
- Consider and
name the true reason why you want to adopt.
- Do you have the
appropriate interior space to house your new
pal?
- Do you have a
fenced in yard?
- Would you
consider fencing in at least a portion of your
yard?
- Do you have a
personal and work lifestyle that enables you to
properly care for, exercise and socialize your
dog?
- Are you willing
to invest time in training your dog?
- Will you
consider local obedience classes?
- Are you willing
to be patient while your dog grows up and learns
what is expected of him/her?
- Will you have
the appropriate care for your dog if you need to
be away for an extended length of time?
- Are you willing
to make the trips to the vet for regular
check-ups and other health issues?
- Are you willing
to spend the additional money on vet bills and
quality food for your new dog?
- Are you willing
to bathe and groom your dog on a regular basis?
- Are you willing
to provide your dog with the same unconditional
love and loyalty that s/he will provide for you?
Helpful hints on
choosing the right dog:
1. Before you leave
home, write down the characteristics you want most
in a dog, so that you have objective reasons for
eliminating inappropriate dogs for your home or
lifestyle.
2. At the Shelter,
walk slowly past each dog. Stop to watch each and
think of all them as a possible pet. We've found
it's helpful to not compare or eliminate dogs at
this point. This first round is for pleasure only.
3. Make a second pass
to narrow the choices. At the end of the second
pass, make a list of the dogs you have selected.
4. Make a third pass
to focus only on the dogs on your list. Measure each
dog by your original preference list and cross off
any dogs that are inappropriate.
5. When you have
finished, ask the OASIS attendant about the dogs you
have selected. The attendant can give you
indications about the dogs' habits and
personalities.
6. The final step in
any adoption is a visit to your vet. Inform your vet
that you are considering an adoption so s/he can
schedule your dog for a checkup. If you do not have
a vet, ask the OASIS staff as we can provide names of vets in your area.
